After falling to the Lancaster Tigers last week 17 to 10 the Jackrabbits rebounded and beat the West Mesquite Wranglers 28 to 20 at Mesquite Memorial Stadium.Special Teams and Defense were the key for the Jackrabbits. The Wranglers were able to control Peter Smith but could not stop Blake Branton who scored twice on runs of three and four yards, rushed for 77 yards and completed 7 of 15 passes for 198 yards, a 28 yard per completion average. Kezie Camp caught 4 passes for 111 yards, Juan Villareal caught 2 for 61 yards and Peter Smith caught 1 for 26 yards.
The Jackrabbits got on the board first on a 1 yard run by Peter Smith who ran 22 times for 73 yards in the game. The Jackrabbit Defense played their best game holding the Wranglers to just 68 yards rushing.
Trevin Marcus ran an early second quarter kickoff back 90 yards for a touchdown. West Mesquite narrowed Forney’s lead to 21-17 late in the second quarter when Edgrick Justice returned a fumble back 10 yards for a touchdown. West Mesquite nearly grabbed the lead as Boykin completed a long pass in the final seconds of the half to Dennis Bio, who made a leaping grab at the Forney two-yard line, then appeared to extend his arms over the goal line. The referees ruled his foot had come down out of bounds at the two, and the half ended.
The Jackrabbits Defense controlled the line of scrimmage in the second half. Brandon Boleware intercepted a pass near the goal line with about a minute left to end a West Mesquite rally. The Jackrabbits were flagged for 11 infractions for 72 yards.
