Chad Laury's 40 yard interception return for a touchdown late in the third quarter broke open a close game as Forney (4-3, 3-1) beat Greenville (2-5, 2-2) friday night at City Bank Stadium.
The Jackrabbits opened the game with a 5 play 80 yard drive. Andre DeRosier scored from the 5 yard line with 10:22 left in the first quarter. DeRosier picked up 71 of the 80 yards on carries of 40, 23, 5 and 4 yards. Thomas Moreland’s PAT gave the Jackrabbits the 7 – 0 early lead. Midway through the first quarter the Lions mounted a 7 play, 61 yard drive but the Jackrabbit defense stopped the Lions at their 16 yard line and the Lions had to settle for a 33 yard field goal with 1:33 left in the first quarter. On the ensuing kickoff Josh Hughes fielded the kick at the 3 yard line and returned it 90 yards to the Lions 7 yard line. The Lions defense rose up and stopped the Jackrabbits. Thomas Moreland kicked a 23 yard field goal to give the Jackrabbits a 10 – 3 lead with 11:22 left in the half. The Lions moved the ball down to the Jackrabbits 16 yard line but were forced to try a 33 yard field goal. The kick was good but the Lions were flagged for illegal procedure and after moving the ball back to the 21 their field goal attempt was wide to the right. The half ended with the Jackrabbits holding a 10 – 3 lead.
At 1:33 of the third quarter Chad Laury intercepted a pass and returned it 40 yards for a Jackrabbit touchdown. Thomas Moreland’s PAT made the score 17 to 3. The Jackrabbits scored again with just: 12 seconds remaining with a 26 yard field goal by Thomas Moreland.
The Jackrabbit defense was awesome holding the Lions to just 129 yards of offense forcing the Lions to punt 7 times, forced 7 fumbles recovering 2 and returning an interception for a touchdown and returning a punt for 90 yards. Clint Kiger and Kenneth Parker were tough in the middle as usual and the Jackrabbit linebackers, Aaron Woods, Jordan Elder, Darnell Golsby and Tyler Sanders controlled the game. Andre DeRosier was also outstanding playing Defense. After the 80 yard opening drive the Jackrabbits were only able to muster 84 more yards of offense finishing the game with just 164 total yards. The Jackrabbits were forced to punt 4 times and Thomas Moreland missed field goals of 47 and 50 yards.
Andre Derosier rushed 10 times for 82 yards to lead the Jackrabbits and Peter Smith had 56 yards on 15 carries.
