| The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse |
|
On this chilly night in October the Four Horsemen rode again. Remember their names?
War, Famine, Pestilence and the Jackrabbit Defense!
The Forney Jackrabbits and the West Mesquite Wranglers faced off Thursday night at Mesquite Memorial Stadium in a game that would eliminate the loser from playoff contention.
The Jackrabbit Defense came into the game knowing that to win they would have to control the Metroplex's 3rd ranked class 4A rusher, Roderick Smith who had averaged 186 yards, 7.1 yards per carry, in the last 8 games. The Jackrabbit's held Smith to 118 yards on 33 attempts an average of 3.56 yards per carry. Smith did manage to score 2 touchdowns of 1 yard and 21 yards.
The Jackrabbit Offense rode the arm of Landon Hartwick who completed 14 of 20 passes for 2 touchdowns of 36 and 50 yards.
The Jackrabbits scored on the third play from scrimmage on a 36 yard flea-flicker from Hartwick to Derosier to Hartwick to Tyler Monroe (4.4) who out ran the Wrangler defenders and made a great catch in the end zone for the 36 yard score just 1:40 into the first quarter. Thomas Moreland's kick was good and the Jackrabbits led 7 to 0. The Jackrabbit Defense held the Wranglers on the next series and the Jackrabbits mounted a 10 play 68 yard drive with Thomas Moreland kicking a 40 yard field goal to give the Jackrabbits a 10 to 0 first quarter lead with 3:08 left in the 1st quarter.
In the 2nd quarter the Wrangler's got on the board with 2 Roderick Smith touchdowns of 1 yard and 21 yards to take the halftime lead 13 to 10.
The Jackrabbits regained the lead on their first possession of the second half. Landon Hartwick rolled out to his left, pumped once to freeze the Wrangler defender and then waived Bobby Lind to go deep and hit Bobby in full stride for a 50 yard bomb. Thomas Moreland's try for point was good giving the Jackrabbits a 17 to 13 lead. This was all that the Jackrabbit defense needed to inspire them in shutting out the Wranglers in the 2nd half.
The Jackrabbit defensive line was especially tough up the middle and Chace Cathy as usual was awsome having to overcome being held on almost every play. The Jackrabbit linebackers are the best in the district swarming to the ball on every play. The defensive secondary held the Wranglers to just 37 yards allowing only 4 completions. Larry Williams was very impressive during the Wranglers last possession breaking up 2 pass plays with agressive tight coverage.
Andre Derosier rushed for 72 yards on 20 attempts to lead the Jackrabbits. The Jackrabbit Offensive Line won the line of scrimmage all night opening holes and moving the pile. Bobby Lind caught 6 passes for 94 yards including the 50 yard touchdown reception, Tony Trotter caught 3 passes for 49 yards, Josh Pope caught 3 for 32 yards and Tyler Monroe caught 2 for 44 yards including a 36 yard touchdown.
